The American Massage Therapy Association was founded in 1943 and is a professional body representing over 50,000 massage therapists in the United States. It provides a range of services for members as well as represents the profession within the wider public sphere.

AMTA has drawn up a code of ethics for members to adhere to. It also publishes professional documents, provides continuing professional education, develops its members, represents massage therapy to the public, and has input into relevant legislation.

The AMTA code of ethics has seven main points. It says that therapists will provide the highest quality massage work to clients, value individuality and not discriminate against anyone, undergo continued education and training, keep confidentiality, practice within the law, avoid sexual misconduct, and accept the responsibility to do no harm to clients or colleagues. This provides a basic framework for all massage therapists to operate within.

According to its mission statement, AMTA is a "diverse, nurturing" organization, which is non-profit. It embraces excellence, endorses professional standards, and believes that massage benefits all.

Amongst its various activities, AMTA looks to the future and attempts to outline how massage therapy will develop. It envisions the public becoming more receptive to the benefits of massage therapy and viewing the American Massage Therapy Association as a trusted resource for information on massage. Its aim is for regulation of massage across all states with a common recognition enabling licensure to be portable across state lines.

AMTA was influential in establishing the creation of the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) which operates the most widely-recognized exam used by states in the regulation and licensure of massage therapists. AMTA provides regular conferences, workshops, and continuing professional development courses through its local chapters which exist in every single state.

It founded the AMTA foundation which raises funds for massage-related research as well as educational scholarships and has awarded over $500,000 since it began.
