Working in a medical office as a massage therapist

Use your massage therapy skills to work with clients in a medical office. There are many rewards to be found in dealing with patients as part of a medical team. You will be a respected member of staff working alongside doctors, nurses, and other allied health professionals.

Work will be varied and unpredictable with the opportunity to work with a wide range of different people. You will have an appointments book with clients booked in by the medical receptionist. Your work will be therapeutic and remedial and you will be working with clients who genuinely need your services.

Often you may be working with clients who have been in an accident and are covered by insurance. Examples of the kind of clients you may have include people who have been injured in car accidents or other incidents, people with osteoarthritis or chronic back pain, people with repetitive strain injuries, or other chronic pain. You may also be working with injured workers to help them recover and return to work as quickly as possible. In addition you may also offer support and relaxation to clients suffering from stress, depression, or cancer. You may also work in a more specialist capacity with rehabilitation work assisting those, for example, who have had strokes.

You are likely to have a heavy workload, although such positions are often part-time. When you are in the office you will probably see clients without much of a break between them and you will be expected to process the accompanying paperwork too. You may liaise with the doctors over specific cases which can help give you a fascinating insight into their work.

This work is quite different from working with clients who simply come to you for relaxation. These are people with genuine and possibly even severe health conditions. You will have the opportunity to make a substantial and lasting difference to the state of their health and wellbeing. The fulfillment and satisfaction of such achievements can't easily be measured.

Although you may employ a wide range of massage techniques in this position, the ones you will most heavily use are Swedish massage or deep tissue massage, both of which are effective in alleviating many symptoms and chronic pain conditions.

You will probably perform this role as an employee with a salary and possibly benefits. However, in some instances you would undertake this job on a self-employed basis and could perhaps combine it with working independently elsewhere.
